Are women really interested in stainless steel wedding rings?

Seriously – are women interested in stainless steel or other alternative metals for their wedding rings? Amazin.com would like us to think so. While doing some general research, I came across these stainless steel wedding rings for women. Well, at least they are categorized that way. I noticed that a few of the designs look exactly like what is marketed towards men, while other rings are thin and very inexpensive. But I have yet to come across a gal that has their heart set on something like stainless steel wedding ring or stainless steel wedding band. I guess time will tell.

Jewelry designer’s jewelry making woes.

 
The hardest part for most new businesses is getting started. And in the world of jewelry, it can be even harder. There are a lot of jewelry niches, and for every roadblock there’s another road or opening. I recently came across this blog post by a new jewelry designer:

You are trying your best, and working ungodly hours to get your business to succeed - You create your website, blog, etc. And then you tell everyone you know about them. You talk about your business and product until your face turns blue. You wear your product (Jewelry)...And people just nod and tell you that you do beautiful work, but no one buys anything. What is that?? This must be one of the days I just feel discouraged. Has anyone starting out in business ever felt that way?

Oh, I know THAT feeling. This very wedding ring blog started off with about a dozen visitors a day. Now? Without an advertising campaign, it’s up to a fairly substantial number – over 200 unique visitors a day, and growing. So the best advice is to keep persistent, and keep typing. And learn the basic little tricks of search engine marketing, as a little bit of knowledge can go a long way.

Consumer asks – is platinum too soft for my ring?

 

A consumer asked the following question in the blog post - Platinum engagment rings? Too soft?

My friend is an “engagement planner” and she told me to avoid platinum for engagement-wedding rings. Even though it’s a wonderful metal, platinum rings are very soft, like gold, and will eventually wear thin on the bottom of the ring. Some of my married friends regret getting platinum because they always have to run to the jeweler every couple of years, dropping $200-300 to fill the ring back. Is platinum really that soft? Should I get a titanium ring instead? I don’t care about price; I’m more concerned about the durability of the ring.

I have NEVER heard of platinum wearing away in such a manner. Platinum does appear to scratch easily, but the metal is in reality just being pushed around. You can literally refinish platinum over and over. Yes – platinum does come at a premium price, but by paying more for platinum now, you get a metal that can literally last a lifetime. Unlike titanium (which the consumer also asked about), platinum rings can be resized

By the way, ALL jewelry needs to be cleaned and cared for. So be sure to have your wedding rings and engagement ring looked at by a jeweler every so often.

Solving a “reaction” to palladium - clean your ring!

 

A few weeks ago, I received an e-mail from a consumer that was having what was deemed an allergic reaction to her palladium ring. “Is there nickel in your palladium?” she asked. “My finger is having an allergic reaction to YOUR palladium.”

I assured the consumer that our palladium mix does not contain any nickel, and at this time palladium is considered a hypoallergenic metal. In fact, palladium is used in dentistry and palladium seeds are used to treat prostate cancer, so if it can go in your body, then it can most likely be wrapped around your finger. Should palladium be scientifically proven to be non- hypoallergenic, then I’ll be the first to talk about it.

I also asked the consumer to make sure that the ring has the metal stamped on the inside (unless it was polished out for an engraving), and to visit one of our retailers for inspection. As it turns out, the concerned individual solved their own problem by cleaning the ring in two parts white vinegar and one part hydrogen peroxide.  They let it sit, washed it well, and repeated the process. They also took a brush with ring cleaner on it and cleaned around the diamond holes. So far, a thorough cleaning of the ring has eliminated the reaction. Soap and dirt was most likely causing the problem.

If you want to be 100% sure that your finger does not have a reaction to the metal that you choose for your wedding ring, then you should choose a platinum ring. Platinum is THE superior metal for wedding rings and jewelry. You will absolutely pay more for platinum now, but the metal has a lifetime of benefits. Palladium is a good choice as well (and the better choice over white gold if platinum is not an option), but platinum may be the way to go if you are concerned with allergic reactions of any type.

And oh yeah – be sure to clean your rings and jewelry regularly. We wash our clothes, so we should also wash our jewelry. You can read more about cleaning your jewelry on Wikipedia.

Reuters reports that Danish jewelry maker Pandora has recently launched an up to $2.16 billion initial public offering of stock. The IPO consists mainly of a big sell off by private owners and could signal the recovery of the Danish IPO market. Pandora, known in the US for their “must have” charms that can be found in practically every jewelry store from coast-to-coast, looks like they’ve become a major player in the world of jewelry during a recession. Both palladium and platinum have their place in the jewelry industry, and palladium has a history as well. In fact, my Grandmother had a palladium wedding ring from before World War II. And about a twelve years ago (if not more), the price of palladium was higher then that of platinum. So if you are interested in palladium, my best advice is to keep doing your research. You may settle for a palladium wedding ring, or you may find that platinum is worth the further investment.

eBay defeats Tiffany lawsuit.

   

In a battle between an Internet upstart vs. a legendary jewelry brand, eBay was awarded the dismissal of a Tiffany & Co lawsuit which accused the company of deliberately deceiving customers by allowing the sale of counterfeit Tiffany jewelry on its website. The court rejected Tiffany's allegation that eBay engaged in false advertising, the last remaining claim after a federal appeals court on April 1 dismissed the rest of Tiffany's trademark infringement case.

I understand that Tiffany would be upset if fake copies of their merchandise were labeled as the real thing. But until you hold the jewelry in your hand, how can you tell from a picture? I can see Tiffany’s case if eBay was allowing vendors to label merchandise as “fake Tiffany” or use the Tiffany name in any way in a deceiving manner. This case definitely highlights some of the deception that happens over the Internet.

Sad but true! A recent survey of Facebook users conducted by gadget insurers Protect Your Bubble found that people value their iPods over cats and (insert GASP noise HERE) wedding rings! iPods came out top with 12% of the 500 respondents voting for it as their most treasured possession, while wedding rings seemed to come in pretty low-down with only 1% of the vote. Alas, just as an iPod has a shuffle function, so do many people’s love lives!
