Every time Sotheby’s Asian auction house has a Patek watch in its lot, it is an auction highlight. And recently, a Patek creation was sold for $312,000. Why such a high price for a watch? Here are some of the key characteristics:
- It has a special minute-repeating function consists of 342 parts, which are all hidden in the casing except for a small switch on the outside that activates the function. The watch reports the time every minute through a coded series of distinct tones.
- Its enamel dial does not tarnish over time.
- The watch has a substantial face which has a 38-millimeter diameter.
- Its traditional design has a classic look (which may never go out of style), and the case is made of platinum – the most durable metal used for jewelry in general.
- There is a long, long waiting list for one of the most powerful brand in watches. You can’t just walk into a store and buy one.

Platinum is the premium metal for jewelry. It's pretty interesting that the body of this watch is made with platinum.
