Platinum and gold engagement rings are close in price, but not in value.

 

I am a big fan of the website My Jewelry Box, but my opinion may be a bit slanted. I met two of the main proprietors for this jewelry website, and they came across as very nice guys who understand the online retail business and have numbers and statistics to back up their claims. Often at trade shows I get approached by online retailers of all types; some are legitimate, and some really are not. In other words, for every Blue Nile, Weddingrings.net or e-Weddingbands.com, there’s plenty of others that are just websites thrown up on the Internet based upon the premise of “if you build it – they will come” mantra.

My Jewelry Box has a strong presence on the Internet. But while looking at engagement rings sold by My Jewelry Box on Amazon.com (to which they have an association), I noticed that almost all of the featured designs are 14kt gold. In fact, I only found two platinum wedding rings in their entire collection, and this strikes me as odd. Yes – the merchandise featured are all priced very well – you’ll find a bargain or two at least. But with the metal prices of gold and platinum being relatively close (check out the current precious metal market prices as of October 4, 2010), wouldn’t it make sense to step up to platinum since it is a much better and naturally white metal? Cheap furniture falls apart, cheap clothing falls apart, many cheap automobiles fall apart, and cheap jewelry will fall apart as well. However, I am not implying that any of the featured engagement rings sold by My Jewelry Box on Amazon.com are cheap or not well made, but I am using the comparison to highlight the fact that there are a few less expensive jewelry products out there that may not be made very well and therefore can fall apart over time. But don’t forget – jewelry can be refinished and repaired. The best benefit of platinum is that it is very durable, and can be refinished to look like new without losing much mass (if any at all). And as I always like to say – pay a little more for platinum now, but get a potential LIFETIME of benefits.
