There are quite a few metals on the market today used for creating wedding rings. Titanium, tungsten, white tungsten and stainless steel are alternatives to the precious metals available today. And palladium, although it is a precious metal, is sometimes mistakenly identified as being an alternative metal. I’ve taken some time to point out the pros for each of these metals, as well as some of the cons.
Titanium
Pros of titanium:
• Titanium is a lightweight metal that is both affordable and strong. It can be a good choice for men that work a lot with their hands, or are adverse to a lot of jewelry in general.
• Titanium is hypoallergenic. Titanium is a nonferrous metal that is virtually safe for anyone to wear.
• Titanium rings are corrosion resistant and durable; it is a non-precious metal that does not tarnish.
• There is a wide variety of titanium wedding ring styles on the market today. Titanium rings can come in a variety of colors, with diamonds, paired with precious metals and more.
Cons of titanium:
• Titanium is not a precious metal.
• Titanium rings can not be re-sized. A titanium ring must be exchanged for a different size if your weight fluctuates.
• Titanium rings have less shine (or bright finish) then precious metal rings. Their appearance is often dull and lacks luster.
• In case of swelling due to injury, titanium rings must be cut off the finger, and the metal is not easy to cut into. The finger may even be injured further during the removal process.
• Although titanium is affordable, the inexpensive nature of titanium may work against the metal in some case. Consumers looking to purchase a true piece of jewelry may pass on titanium due to its low price. In some more elite consumers eyes, low price = lesser value.
Tungsten/white tungsten
Pros of tungsten:
• Tungsten is a very durable material that is scratch resistant. Tungsten rings are a great choice for men who work a lot with their hands or with heavy tools.
• Tungsten rings are low maintenance. They do not easily lose their shine easily, and may stay brilliant-looking for a long time.
• Tungsten rings are considered hypo-allergenic.
Cons of tungsten:
• Tungsten is a non-precious metal that can not be re-sized. A tungsten ring has to be exchanged should the wearer’s weigh fluctuate.
• Tungsten is a very hard metal that has to be cut off the finger should that finger swell in an emergency situation.
• Tungsten rings are difficult to engrave the traditional way, and should be engraved with a laser tool.
• If struck just right, a tungsten ring can actually shatter.
Stainless steel
Pros of stainless steel:
• Stainless steel is an affordable metal that resembles a white precious metal. It has a white silvery tone and a reasonably low retail price. A stainless steel ring may cost much less than most precious metal rings or even many non-precious metal rings on the market today.
• Stainless steel rings are easy to maintain, and can be cleaned with a mild detergent and soft cloth.
• Stainless steel is very durable and sturdy. Because of this, stainless steel is commonly used to build appliances and even buildings.
Cons of stainless steel:
• Stainless steel stains less, but is not a stain free material. Stainless steel rings require regular cleaning to prevent a loss of luster.
• Stainless steel often contains nickel, so individuals with a nickel allergy may have a reaction.
• Stainless steel is not a precious metal, and therefore can not make the same statement as precious metal jewelry.
• Stainless steel rings can not be sized, and must be exchanged if an individual’s weight fluctuates.
Palladium
Pros of palladium:
• Palladium is a naturally white precious metal that is currently more affordable than most gold or platinum pieces of jewelry.
• Palladium is hypo-allergenic, so it’s a good choice for brides or grooms that have to pass on gold due to a nickel allergy. Palladium is the better choice over white gold if platinum is just not an option.
• Palladium is durable, so a palladium wedding ring can potentially stand the test of time. A palladium wedding ring can also be refinished without losing much metal.
• Unlike most non-precious metals used in jewelry today, palladium has intrinsic value.
Cons of palladium:
• Palladium is not a direct substitute for platinum (due to their similar properties), but another metal choice that can be used for jewelry.
• Due to its hardness, palladium can be difficult for many jewelers or manufacturers to work with. However, Novell has mastered the art of working with palladium.
