Palladium wedding ring and jewelry facts.

Palladium, along with platinum, rhodium and ruthenium, is a member of a group of elements referred to as the “platinum group” or the Platinum Group Metals. Wedding ring manufacturer Wright and Lato actually named their PGM Collection after this grouping. Although it has been used in jewelry for a long time (my Grandmother had a palladium wedding ring), palladium usage really took off in the 1970s. Palladium (along with platinum) is often used in a car’s catalytic converter.  In fact, over half the supply of palladium and platinum go into the production of catalytic converters.  Palladium is also found in many electronic devices, including computers and mobile phones. Overall, palladium is used in much more than just jewelry; it is not a new metal, although it gained more attention a few years ago after its market value plummeted (making it very affordable). Palladium is sometimes mistakenly referred to as an alternative metal, but it is clearly not.

Palladium is naturally white, pure and hypoallergenic; it’s not man-made, so it comes from the ground white (unlike white gold, which is man-made).  You also don’t have to worry about a nickel allergy associated with white gold. You know - the allergy that you didn’t realize you had until you bought an expensive gold ring? It can be said that with palladium - what you see is literally what you get. A palladium wedding ring does not have to be rhodium-plated to enhance its whiteness. It could be, but it is not necessary, so beware if a jeweler tries to up sell a rhodium finish for your palladium or even platinum wedding ring. It probably does not happen often, but I have heard of such a thing.

Palladium is less dense than most precious metals, so if you are looking for a wedding ring that may be lighter than a comparable design created in gold, then it’s a good choice. Yet there also is hardness to the metal, so you don’t sacrifice wear ability. If you are an active person that needs a durable ring, palladium won’t tarnish, chip, or fade. But if you swim in pools a lot, then you probably want to remove your palladium wedding ring. Chlorine can affect its finish.

But please keep in mind that I am not suggesting that palladium is a better metal than platinum, as I firmly believe platinum is the superior metal for wedding rings. But palladium makes great jewelry, and is another option to consider when deciding on the right metal for your wedding ring. Palladium is the definitive choice over white gold should platinum not be a reality due to its current price. Wedding ring to be a reality show star (part two)!

So, it’s true. One of my company’s wedding ring designs will be featured on an upcoming reality show for a major cable channel! I literally hustled almost two hours out to the metal supplier to pick up two “parts” that needed to be made into a size 12.5 ring. Now that’s a BIG finger! The picture below illustrates how the two parts fit together – there’s an inner sleeve created from Argentium Sterling Silver and an outer gold cover. It’s made this way to help keep the retail costs down for those that need an affordable wedding ring but still want a design created from precious metals.

So you might be asking – why precious metals? Rings made from alternative metals such as tungsten, titanium and ceramic can NOT be sized down the road. This is particular wedding ring style gives the consumer a choice that won’t break their piggy band, but will still allow some growth or weight loss.

My initial goal was to follow the wedding ring through the factory, but time constraints were getting in the way. From the time the metal arrived, it was just a few hours later until the ring had to be finished. Here’s the final design:

How to make a million dollars! Sizable tungsten!

 

Want to make a million dollars in the jewelry industry? All you have to do is create one very special variation to a very popular metal for wedding rings, which is tungsten. To make a million dollars, just create a reworking of tungsten that can be sized. Heck – you’ll probably make much more than a million dollars.

Tungsten wedding rings look great and feel nice to the touch. Tungsten wedding rings are popular in both retailer jewelry stores and online. So I challenge a physicist, engineer, chemist or scientist of any field to come up with a material that can still be called tungsten yet be sized and resized. If you do, you are well on your way towards making a million dollars!

Are alternative metals being phased out in retailers?

 

Lately I’ve been hearing from wedding ring retailers – the bricks-and-mortar types and not online retailers - that rings made with alternative metals (titanium, tungsten, cobalt, etc.) are just too hard to sell or rely on within a store environment. Yes – these products can sell well over the Internet when priced in the range of $49.99 - $99.99, but how can you sustain an actual jewelry store with sales like these? You can, but you have to make hundreds of them.

There will always be a certain amount of future grooms that will be looking for a simple and often cheap answer for their wedding ring needs. Many men are just not comfortable visiting a jewelry store to make a purchase for their own needs, even if it’s their wedding ring. And alternative metal wedding rings offer a lot of flexibility and variety in their styling. But there’s also a downside. Want to know what it potentially is? Keep reading!

“One must also remember that these new alternative metals cannot be sized- so most probably as you go through life, on your 30th wedding anniversary you will not be wearing the original symbol of your love.”

Paul believes that the sum of one’s creative life is not always what you make, but also how you make it. And obviously these words are words that are lived by.
