I tend to pay attention to commercials when they come on television, and not just during the Super Bowl. Heck – I even search them out on YouTube. Recently I came across a Honda Civic TV commercial called "Date with a Woodsman." It was then that I realized that I knew its featured song from somewhere. After a little research, I found out the song is "All I Want Is You” by musician Barry Louis Polisar. Aside from the car spot, “All I Want Is You” is probably known well for being featured in the movie Juno.
“All I Want Is You” was originally written and recorded way back in 1977. Its use in Juno propelled Barry's 30-plus year career to new heights. The song has been used in countless weddings and proposals throughout the years, as this YouTube video shows. Barry even actually attended a wedding where it was featured! I am not a songwriter or author (outside of this blog), so that has to be a special moment (if not sort of surreal). “All I Want Is You” really seems to touch something within many with people, which is ironic because it was viewed as "filler" for Barry's second album. In fact, he almost didn't even record it. Many years later, the soundtrack album to Juno went on to win a Grammy and sell over a million copies. File this one under “Better Late than Never!”
Barry Louis Polisar has been singing songs to children and families for the past 35 years. His first record, "I Eat Kids and Other Songs for Rebellious Children," was released way back in 1975. And now, a few of those children he used to entertain have banded together and released a 2-CD, 60-song, tribute album called We're Not Kidding: A Tribute to Barry Louis Polisar. With titles like "Never Cook Your Sister in a Frying Pan" and "My Brother Threw Up on My Stuffed Toy Bunny," Barry's atypical and off-the-wall songs are re-invented; an Irish band covers Barry's song "Potty Training," and a Klezmer band sings "Don't Put Your Finger Up Your Nose"- in Yiddish! Apparently Kiss wasn’t available for this project, so better luck next time!
We're Not Kidding: A Tribute to Barry Louis Polisar was concocted in the brain of Aaron Cohen, the lead singer of the L.A. punk band The Radioactive Chicken Heads. Aaron had Barry's albums as a child and claims him as his biggest influence (aside from, of course, radioactive chickens – just kidding).
You can hear free samples on Barry’s website. And buy We're Not Kidding: A Tribute to Barry Louis Polisar on Amazon.com. The reviews have been outstanding!
