According to Google’s Insights for Search, the term “black diamond rings” has increased in popularity by 40% since the beginning of 2011 (as of the post date – February 15, 2011). And when I go over to Amazon.com, it’s amazing to see how many black diamond wedding rings that are being offering in white gold, which is a metal that is not naturally white. Personally, I’d like to have a diamond of any color set in platinum due to its strength and naturally white color. And if platinum is out, then I’d ask my jeweler about palladium instead of white gold.

Platinum wedding rings for sale – platinum is worth its price!

 

If you take a look at all of the platinum wedding rings, engagement rings and jewelry for sale on Amazon.com, you will see a wide variety of styles and price points. Platinum may appear to be the most expensive metal currently being used for wedding rings and engagement rings today, but you get what you pay for. Platinum is the premium used for jewelry today, and its benefits will potentially last a lifetime. A Patek watch recently sold for $312,000, and the body of the watch was made with platinum, so if such a prestigious watch brand utilizes platinum, then it has to be worth its price. And besides, gold is not that far behind in price. Pay a little more for platinum now, but its benefits are worth its weight in – well PLATINUM!

I am a big fan of the website My Jewelry Box, but my opinion may be a bit slanted. I met two of the main proprietors for this jewelry website, and they came across as very nice guys who understand the online retail business and have numbers and statistics to back up their claims. Often at trade shows I get approached by online retailers of all types; some are legitimate, and some really are not. In other words, for every Blue Nile, Weddingrings.net or e-Weddingbands.com, there’s plenty of others that are just websites thrown up on the Internet based upon the premise of “if you build it – they will come” mantra.

My Jewelry Box has a strong presence on the Internet. But while looking at engagement rings sold by My Jewelry Box on Amazon.com (to which they have an association), I noticed that almost all of the featured designs are 14kt gold. In fact, I only found two platinum wedding rings in their entire collection, and this strikes me as odd. Yes – the merchandise featured are all priced very well – you’ll find a bargain or two at least. But with the metal prices of gold and platinum being relatively close (check out the current precious metal market prices as of October 4, 2010), wouldn’t it make sense to step up to platinum since it is a much better and naturally white metal? Cheap furniture falls apart, cheap clothing falls apart, many cheap automobiles fall apart, and cheap jewelry will fall apart as well. However, I am not implying that any of the featured engagement rings sold by My Jewelry Box on Amazon.com are cheap or not well made, but I am using the comparison to highlight the fact that there are a few less expensive jewelry products out there that may not be made very well and therefore can fall apart over time. But don’t forget – jewelry can be refinished and repaired. The best benefit of platinum is that it is very durable, and can be refinished to look like new without losing much mass (if any at all). And as I always like to say – pay a little more for platinum now, but get a potential LIFETIME of benefits.

Titanium jewelry is becoming more mainstream.

I didn’t realize this, but apparently titanium jewelry invaded The Oscars this year. While I tend to think of jewelry as being created with a precious metal, it’s easy to see why titanium jewelry is becoming more and more popular. As the author of How Titanium Jewelry Invaded the Oscars writes:

“During the presentation of the Best Picture category, they showed a brief glimpse of Jeremy Renner who starred in the eventual Best Picture winner The Hurt Locker. During this glimpse I noticed that Renner was wearing one of those titanium rings which I’ve seen gaining in popularity in recent years. Renner’s ring seemed pretty standard with its simple shape, and subtle design.”

The author mentions that titanium rings have grown on him, and the same has happened with my three favorite people – me, myself and I (just kidding)! In troubled economic times, titanium jewelry is affordable and lasts. And unlike tungsten in recent years, titanium jewelry has for the most part been reasonably priced and not presented with an inflated value. Just last year, you could see necklaces with titanium aspects around the necks of many Major League Baseball pitchers and fielders. While I prefer a precious metal wedding ring or piece of jewelry (intrinsic value means something to me – call me old fashioned), it looks like titanium jewelry is here to stay.
