Some celebrity rings matter because they are expensive. Others matter because they change the visual vocabulary of engagement jewellery. Jackie Kennedy’s Van Cleef & Arpels two-stone ring belongs to the second category.

People revisited the ring in September 2026, describing the original 1953 design as an emerald-cut diamond paired with an emerald in the classic toi et moi arrangement. Jackie later had the ring redesigned in 1962, adding further diamond elements.

Illustrative editorial image. Toi et moi rings remain distinctive because the eye reads two focal points rather than one central hierarchy.

What does “toi et moi” mean?

The French phrase means “you and me”. In jewellery, it usually describes two principal stones set together as a pair.

Why two-stone rings keep returning

The format is naturally symbolic without requiring literal engraving. It also allows contrast: diamond with emerald, two different diamond cuts, two colours or two stones with family significance.

The design can be asymmetric without looking accidental

Unlike a three-stone ring, the composition does not need a central anchor. That gives designers more freedom with angle, height and stone shape.

The lasting idea is not “copy Jackie Kennedy”. It is that two stones can create a relationship on the hand rather than a single focal point.

What modern buyers should check

  • Do the stones sit at similar heights?
  • Will one setting catch more easily than the other?
  • Can a straight wedding band fit underneath or alongside?
  • If the stones are different materials, do they require different care?
