Autumn flowers are easy to over-theme. Add rust-coloured leaves, pumpkins and dark red roses to everything and the wedding can start to feel like seasonal retail display. The strongest fall weddings use the season more quietly: texture, foliage, fruiting branches, warmer light and richer colour.

Autumn flowers do not have to be dark. Texture and seasonality can do more work than a stereotypical colour palette.

Start with what is naturally available

Ask your florist what looks especially good locally in the month of your wedding.

Use foliage as a material, not filler

Branches, grasses and leaves can create shape and movement. They are particularly useful in large venues where tiny flower heads disappear from a distance.

Do not make every arrangement identical

A bouquet, ceremony installation and table arrangement have different jobs.

Colour can be quieter than “autumn colours”

Cream, tobacco, soft pink, olive, burgundy and warm brown can suggest the season without becoming a theme.

Think about the room after dark

Autumn weddings often spend more of the reception in artificial light, so stronger shapes and candlelight can help the room hold together.
