A wedding ring should not need to look new forever. Scratches and patina are normal signs of wear. Maintenance is about keeping the ring structurally sound and comfortable.

Ring type Typical routine Professional consideration
Yellow/rose gold Gentle cleaning Check deep wear and settings
White gold Gentle cleaning Rhodium replating may restore bright-white finish
Platinum Gentle cleaning; patina can be left or polished Specialist refinishing if desired
Diamond-set band Clean around settings carefully Have stones/settings inspected periodically

Simple home cleaning

For many plain gold and platinum rings, mild soap, warm water and a very soft brush are enough to remove everyday residue.

Do not polish constantly

Professional polishing removes a small amount of surface material.

White gold and rhodium plating

Many white-gold rings rely on rhodium plating for a bright white appearance.

Stone-set bands need extra attention

If a ring catches on clothing, receives a hard knock or begins to rattle, stop wearing it and have the setting checked.

For metal-specific behaviour, see GIA’s everyday ring-metal guide.
