Wedding dress codes become confusing when familiar words are used loosely. The easiest way to understand them is to separate daytime formality, evening formality and ordinary tailored dress rather than treating every dark suit as interchangeable.

Morning dress

Morning dress is traditional formal daytime wear. It has its own structure and should be treated as a specific dress code rather than simply a more formal lounge suit.

Lounge suit

A lounge suit is the standard modern tailored suit and covers a broad range of weddings. Colour, cloth and accessories can move it from business-like to celebratory without changing the basic form.

Black tie

Black tie is evening dress built around the dinner suit or tuxedo. Its strength is consistency: the dress code looks most convincing when the key conventions are followed rather than selectively dismantled.

Semi-formal and modern invitation wording

Modern invitations often use “semi-formal” more loosely than traditional dress-history terminology. Read the venue, time of day and any guidance from the couple alongside the words themselves.
